Playing with apples
No need to be bored when you have apples! Here are three fun games for the whole family:
Apple tasting
Sweet, sour and healthy. Apples have it all. And everyone likes apples – young or old. Here are some suggestions for using the apples.
Apples on a string
You will need:
• As many apples as there are people playing
• Long pieces of string
• A knife or similar implement to make holes through the apples
This is what you do:
• Make a hole though the apples in the direction of the core.
• Thread a string through the apple and hang it from a tree or the ceiling, etc.
• Hang all the apples next to one another.
Rules
• With their hands behind their back, the players have to try to eat their own apple.
• The first one to finish his or her apple wins.
Baked apples
Ingredients:
6 eating apples
30 g butter
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp chopped nuts
2 tbsp desiccated coconut
3 tbsp rolled oats
2 tbsp chopped beech nuts
4 tbsp honey or cane sugar
This is what you do:
• Core the apples.
• Then cream the butter with the cocoa and the other ingredients.
• Fill the apples with the mixture and place in an ovenproof dish.
• Bake the apples until tender at 180°C for around 25 minutes.
• Served with a blob of whipped cream.
Alternatively:
• Wrap the apples in 2–3 layers of foil.
• Then place them in a glowing fire.
• Remember to turn them regularly with tongs or the like.
• After max. 10 minutes the apples will be done.
Puzzle with apples
You will need:
• Lots of apples
This is what you do:
• Cut each apple in two. The shapes should be unusual, so that each piece is different.
Rules
• The game is all about putting the apples back together again. The players take it in turns to try to find the pieces of apple that fit together.
• The player who matches most pairs wins.
Toffee apples
Ingredients:
8 apples
250 g sugar
100 ml water
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (other cider can also be used)
This is what you do:
• Place the sugar in a small saucepan.
• Heat the sugar briefly and then add the water and vinegar.
• Put sticks in the apples.
• When the caramel has formed, dip the apples into it.
Decoration:
• Desiccated coconut
• Chopped almonds
• Hundreds and thousands
Balancing with apples
You will need:
• Apples
• Napkins
This is what you do:
• Place the napkin flat on the floor in front of the player.
Rules
• The player has to bend forwards, balancing the apple on his or her neck.
• As soon as the apple has been placed on the player’s neck, the player is not allowed to touch it.
• The player must then get down on his or her hands and knees and pick up the napkin.
• The apple must not roll off the player’s neck.
• Continue until only the winner remains.
Danish apple cake
Ingredients:
Lots of apples
Sugar
Breadcrumbs
Butter
This is what you do:
• Peel all the apples.
• Quarter the apples, remembering to remove the core.
• Then cut the apple pieces into wedges.
• Cover and simmer the apples over a low heat for around 10 minutes or until the apples are soft, stirring occasionally.
• Add sugar to taste.
• Then mix the breadcrumbs and sugar.
• Melt the butter in a pan, add the breadcrumbs and cook until crisp and golden.
• Lay a sheet of baking paper over a cooling rack and tip the breadcrumbs out onto it.
Leave the mixture to cool, stirring occasionally.
• Then layer the stewed apple and breadcrumbs in a bowl.
• The top layer should be breadcrumbs.
Decoration:
• Whipped cream and redcurrant jelly
• Chopped almonds in the breadcrumbs
